Bear the belly?

Tummy TuckWe loathe having to wear unnecessary clothing during hot weather, but what if you feel that the oversized shirt, or the extra layers are there to camouflage that pouch you’ve been trying to get rid of without effect, or the extra loose skin you’ve acquired after having your baby.

Weakened abdominal muscles, persistent fat deposits and excess skin make us cringe at the thought of baring the belly to the sunlight, making us bundle it up in hiding in deep hibernation. As we age, our skin loses elasticity and weight loss through exercise will no longer eliminate the flabby belly, for this you need to put yourself into the skill hands of a surgeon for a tummy tuck.

About the Tummy Tuck

The much discussed tummy tuck is a surgical procedure to tighten abdominal muscles and remove excess fat and skin from the stomach area. The result is no sagging skin and a smooth flat abdomen.  There are scars that are as a result of the surgery usually below the bikini line as well as around the belly button however the scars will normally fade within the first year. If there is minimal fat and sagging occurring below the belly button, your surgeon may propose a mini tummy tuck. Women who are considering having children should wait as a pregnancy will stretch the abdominal muscles once again and require a repeat procedure.

The procedure itself takes from 2 to 5 hours with 2 weeks recovery time and it takes 6 weeks prior to any vigorous exercise.  There are minimal risks associated with the surgery, there is a potential for loss of skin sensation in around the abdominal skin and it may take several months for feeling to return.  If fluid accumulation occurs, it is removed for 2-3 weeks with a needle at your clinic. In rare cases skin loss occurs due to infection or excessive tension which causes the incision to heal at a slower pace.

Tightening the Tummy
There are many side effects to cosmetic surgery that must be fully understood before committing to a procedure. The tummy tuck is no different. A consultation will provide this information. It is important for a patient to ask important questions and to expect direct answers from the clinic providing the procedure.

What happens in a tummy tuck procedure? An incision is made above the pubic hairline. The skin is pulled down and excess fat and skin are removed. The skin is reattached. Scars normally fade within a year of the procedure. A patient will need at least two weeks recovery time. Then they can return to work and resume most activity. Strenuous activity should be avoided for another four weeks.

The surgery is performed while the patient is under general anesthetic.

Very important to note: the best results will occur with a patient who is in good shape physically, but has excess fat and skin deposits in the abdominal region and does not respond to physical activity. It is not an option for a quick weight loss plan. Women who are planning future pregnancies should hold off on the surgery as the skin will stretch again, making the surgery a moot point.

Thousands of surgeries are completed successfully each year. Building a good rapport with the clinic and the surgeon is of paramount importance as this is a positive life-changing experience that will improve self-esteem and confidence!
